This conference incorporates new materials that are particularly relevant to teachers and those working with children and adolescents in a structured setting.
Come and learn how to better listen and respond using effective methods.
•Part 1: Understanding brain-based behavior disorder.
◦What is going on when someone with intellectual disabilities and/or autism doesn’t respond well to training efforts.

◦How to assist a person who is capable in some areas but dependent in others.

Featuring psychologist Nathan Ory.
He has worked in Victoria, British Columbia since 1978 with children and adults with mentally disabling conditions. He has specialized in serving persons with intellectual disabilities and the developmental disabilities of autism spectrum and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; extremely challenging behavior, and/or diagnosis with a concurrent mental illness.
Since 1990 Nathan has been a member of a multi-disciplinary mental health support team on Vancouver Island (Island Mental Health Support Team) which assists persons to remain in their community settings. He describes his roles as including functional behavior analysis, direct counseling, caregiver training about the effect of an individual's cognitive limitations on that person's coping ability, prescriptive behavioral strategies and emotional management strategies. Nathan has published the second edition (2007) of his book, Working with People with Challenging Behavior: A guide for maintaining positive relationships. (available at the event)
