2004 Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Report
Dear Friends,
As I reflect on the achievements of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital
(LPCH) in 2004, I am thankful for all that has been made possible by your
contributions. This past year, more people than ever before made gifts
in support of Hospital programs, a trend for which we are especially grateful.
Thanks to the generosity of our growing community of friends, the five-year,
$500 million Campaign for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital reached its
initial goal in the fall of 2004—just three years after it was launched.
This unprecedented accomplishment helped us recruit a renowned team of
pediatric experts, update our facilities, and invest in groundbreaking
research and treatment programs that have greatly enhanced our ability
to provide superb pediatric health care. As a result, LPCH is recognized
locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally, as a center
for advancing the health of children and expectant mothers.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital |
The Hospital continues to operate on a sound financial base. In the past
year, LPCH invested $65 million in community programs, charity care, and
un-reimbursed health care. We made significant investments to expand our
outpatient clinics and our partnerships with community- based organizations
to improve pediatric and obstetric care locally. In addition, we provided
highly specialized care to families from all over the world with complex
medical conditions.
We will build on this tremendous progress as we complete the final stretch
of the Campaign. I thank all of you for your commitment to the Hospital,
and look forward to another innovative year as we work together for the
benefit of children and expectant mothers.
Sincerely,
Christopher Dawes
President and Chief Executive Officer
Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital

Gift Highlights
- Mary L. Johnson Center for Ambulatory Care: LPCH's
busy outpatient pediatric and specialty care clinics have a new and
expanded home across the street from the main hospital, featuring state-of-theart
technology and child-friendly décor. The center was a gift from
Charles and Ann Johnson, and was named in memory of their daughter,
Mary. Another recent gift, from the Adalyn Jay Foundation, funded a
respiratory clinic at the new center.
- Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Clinical Fellows Fund: To train future pediatric leaders, a $10 million gift from Susan and
Lynn Orr established the country’s largest endowed fund in support
of pediatric clinical fellows.
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine: In partnership with
Stanford Medical Center, LPCH now offers the area's only emergency services
for children. More than 40 campaign donors helped raise $11 million
to support the effort, beginning with a gift from Pilar and Lew Davies
to establish the Davies Family Endowed Director of Pediatric Emergency
Medicine. The position now is held by Bernard Dannenberg, M.D., a newly
recruited specialist in pediatrics and emer- gency medicine. In fall
2004, a gift from LPCH Board Chair John Freidenrich and his wife, Jill,
in support of pediatric emergency medicine, pushed campaign totals over
the $500 million mark.
- Children's Heart Center: A gift from Elizabeth and
Bruce Dunlevie established the James Baxter Wood and Yvonne Craig Wood
Directorship of Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care. Stephen J.
Roth, M.D., M.P.H., a national leader in pediatric intensive care, was
recruited to LPCH in 2004 and named as the first Director. Another gift
from Siebel Systems Cofounder and Vice Chairman Pat House created the
Alex Vibber Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Research to support two
pediatric fellows within the Children’s Heart Center.
- Ford Family Surgical Suite: Construction has begun
on six new operating rooms designed specifically for pediatric patients,
along with child-friendly preand post-operating areas, and inviting
intake and waiting areas. Following a lead gift from the Ford family
to establish the new suite, a 2004 gift from Jim and Becky Morgan will
outfit an operating room with state-of-the-art pediatric equipment.
