2005 Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Report
Dear Friends,
Once again, your dedication and generosity have fueled
a year of phenomenal progress for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

Christopher
Dawes, President and CEO,
Lucile Packard Children's Hospital |
Last April we were able to complete the Campaign for
Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, thanks to unprecedented donations
of $526 million for patient care, research, and training. This remarkable
influx of philanthropic support allowed us to care for more children and
expectant mothers than ever before. It also enabled us to recruit the
finest specialists, invest in the latest technologies, and strengthen
the Hospital's financial health so we can continue to meet our community's
evolving health needs.
Our achievements were recognized by U.S.News & World
Report, which ranked Packard as one of the top 10 children's hospitals
in the nation in 2005. We also received three national patient safety
awards last year, including a perfect score from the Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations. We won these accolades because
of our outstanding team of caregivers and staff, whose work is made possible
by your generosity.
Today we are providing the most advanced pediatric and
obstetric care available. Our physicians and researchers are developing
previously unimagined treatments for children and mothers. Equally important,
we are able to attend to the many non-medical needs of our patients and
families by providing art and play therapy, counseling, and spiritual
support.
Your gifts also have made it possible for us to establish
community partnerships that reach underserved children throughout our
region, and we continue to treat any child in our community, regardless
of a family's ability to pay.
I am proud of what we have accomplished together and
I look forward to an exciting future for our Hospital. On behalf of the
children and families we serve, I thank you for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Christopher G. Dawes
President and Chief Executive Officer

Highlights
- U.S.News & World Report named Lucile Packard Children's Hospital
as one of the top 10 children's hospitals in the nation and
the best on the West Coast in 2005. Packard's rise in prominence
reflects the many world-class programs developed during the Campaign
for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
- Packard Children's received a perfect hospital and patient
safety scores from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Hospital Organizations (JCAHO); a number one ranking out of 858 hospitals
in quality from the Leapfrog Group; and a first place Race for Results
Award for ongoing improvements in patient safety from the Child Health
Corporation of America.
- Staffed by Packard doctors, nurses, and other specialists, the
community's only facility offering emergency services specifically for
children opened in December 2005 at Stanford University Hospital.
More than 50 individual donors contributed a combined total of $11 million
toward developing the pediatric emergency program.
- Packard and the Stanford University School of Medicine recruited leading
pulmonary biologist David Cornfield, MD, to head the Pulmonary
Center of Excellence, which includes the Division of Pulmonary Medicine,
Asthma and Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. His arrival from the
University of Minnesota Medical School is expected to expand research
and teaching in pediatric pulmonary medicine and help develop a comprehensive
approach to caring for children with lung health problems. Cornfield
has been appointed the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor in Pediatric
Pulmonary Medicine. The professorship is named in honor of the Basses
by an anonymous donor.
- The construction of a new clinic and diagnostic center for
heart patients and a new dialysis and treatment center moved forward in 2005. Packard's pediatric cardiology and kidney
transplant programs are considered among the best in the world. Both
facilities were funded through Campaign gifts and are expected to open
in spring 2006.
- Stem cell expert Kenneth Weinberg, MD, joined Packard
Hospital from Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as the Anne T. and Robert
M. Bass Professor in Pediatric Cancer and Blood Diseases and leader
of the stem cell transplant program. Weinberg's expertise will boost
transplantation, oncology, and immunology research efforts within Packard's
premier cancer center, which is home to leading programs in clinical
oncology and cancer biology. His recruitment was made possible by a
generous gift from Anne and Robert Bass.
- Packard Children's invested $82.4 million in community benefits in 2005. This included uncompensated medical care to children who do
not have health insurance or are covered under Medi-Cal and other government
programs. Benefits also included the cost of services provided in programs
such as the mobile adolescent program, the Parent Information Resource
Center, and as part of a partnership with Ravenswood Family Health Center
in East Palo Alto.
