Building the Best in Children's Health:
The Campaign for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital

WINTER 2004- In an extraordinary achievement, the philanthropic community has rallied to pass the Campaign's original five-year $500 million goal in just three years. Donors' generosity has assured Packard's place in the ranks of the world's leading children's hospitals. Now, with two years remaining to build on our success, these Campaign-inspired initiatives have opened unprecendented possibilities for advancing children's health.

National Preeminence

Children's Heart Center – Ten leading pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, and researchers have joined Packard's heart program, now considered one of the nation's best.

Top Ranked Surgeons – Packard's surgical team has more than doubled, and now offers care from expert surgeons in a broad range of specialties.

A Strong Foundation, a Promising Future

Ford Family Surgical Center – In 2006, the Hospital's first dedicated pediatric operating rooms will open.

Vera Moulton Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease – Packard offers one of the few centers dedicated to the study and treatment of this devastating disease.

Cancer Care and Research – A comprehensive center to care for children with cancer and blood diseases will open in 2005 on the Hospital's first floor.

Neurosurgery – Michael Edwards, M.D., an internationally known pediatric neurosurgeon recruited in 2004, now leads Packard's growing neurosurgery team.

Transplant Programs – Packard is one of the few children's hospitals that perform life-saving pediatric intestinal transplants, building on its highly successful kidney and liver transplant programs.

Children's Surgical Research – Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering offer pediatric surgeons better materials and techniques to heal children.

Cystic Fibrosis Center – Innovative treatments help increase the life span and improve the quality of life for patients.

Charles and Ann B. Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services – This model of integrated care for mother and baby has expanded its network of nurseries to seven neighboring communities.

Packard Brand of Care

Palliative Care – Established in 2001, Packard's program for children with life-limiting illnesses was one of the first of its kind to be offered at a U.S. children's hospital.

Pediatric Emergency Services – At Stanford University Medical Center, Packard now provides the area’s only emergency services just for children.

Pediatric Imaging Suite – Northern California's first-ever pediatric CT/MRI imaging facility pairs state-of-the-art technology with therapists who guide children through the procedures.

Mary L. Johnson Center for Ambulatory Care – The center offers new and expanded facilities for Packard's busy pediatric and specialty care clinics, serving local children.

Family-Centered, Child-Friendly Care – The Hospital cares for the whole child and the family through programs such as child-life therapy, interpreter services, and chaplaincy services.

Research and Training

Children's Biotechnology Initiative – Packard physicians and Stanford scientists are stepping up their collaborations to tap into the frontiers of biosciences in search of treatments and cures.

Center for Advanced Pediatric Education (CAPE) – The only medical simulation training program in the world for pediatrics and obstetrics opened in 2002.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Clinical Fellows Fund – To train future pediatric leaders, Packard established the country's largest endowed fund in support of pediatric clinical fellows.

Distinguished Packard Fellows – This novel program supports the work of leading faculty in medical and surgical specialties.
