A Day With Harvey

As chief of staff for nearly 14 years, he helped guide the Hospital as he would a patient—from its infancy to its maturity as it took a "mega-leap forward" toward the ranks of top children's hospitals. Much of this progress is due to the successful fundraising efforts of the Campaign for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, says Cohen, who also serves as the chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
Hospital admissions have more than doubled over the past 10 years; outcomes for kids with transplants, cancer, heart disease, and cystic fibrosis have dramatically improved; outreach programs have blossomed; and grant support for research in the Department of Pediatrics is up fivefold.
Above all, Cohen says, "I'm very proud of the kind of family centered comprehensive care that's delivered. Great things are happening, technologically. But we never lose sight of the fact that we take care of children, not diseases."
Next summer, Cohen will step down from his post to get back to two of his earlier loves: biochemical research and direct patient care. He'll start by working with scientists in Stanford's Department of Chemistry and Biostatistics to learn more about mass spectrometry and bioinformatics, new technologies that give valuable information about diseases such as leukemia, prematurity, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and Kawasaki's Disease. After that, he'll resume teaching medical school courses and practicing his specialty -- caring for kids with cancer.
