Bed Control -- nursing station, 3 East Unit:
Pam Wells, RN, vice president of patient services, meets with Cohen and Rosana Pinpin, RN, to discuss the lack of available beds.

His cell phone is ringing. It's a nursing supervisor with an increasingly common problem: too many young patients, not enough beds. In this case, there's a boy at Mills Peninsula who's having serious complications following a Packard liver transplant. The child needs to come back immediately, but that means postponing someone else's admission. It's not a nice part of the job—but Cohen knows it's his and the hospital's responsibility to provide care for the sickest children first. With so many families drawn to Packard these days, Cohen explains, "It's the agony of victory. Four years ago we may have had to do this three times the whole year. This past year, we have to deal with it daily."
