Circle of Care Spotlight

As a local business owner, Bill Butler believes it is his responsibility to support organizations that provide care and services for children throughout the community. In addition to making his own personal philanthropic gifts, Bill also has instilled a culture of social responsibility at his company,W. L. Butler Construction, Inc.

The company and its employees now support a variety of organizations, but Packard Children's is one that Bill has chosen to fund at a leadership level.

"Every year I support the Lucile Packard Children's Fund with a Circle of Care gift because I know that my donation is going to a great cause -- providing the very best care for our Bay Area children," he says.

Bill says that he especially likes knowing that his Children's Fund gift to the Hospital will aid children whose families lack adequate health coverage. "Packard helps children live longer, more productive lives, including those kids who otherwise might not have a chance at a healthy future," he adds.

Next year, Bill and W. L. Butler Construction, Inc. will raise their support to a new level. Beginning in 2007, they have committed $100,000 each year for three years as a matching gift to encourage more donors to support the Children's Fund at the Circle of Care level of $10,000 or more. This contribution will match Circle of Care gifts to the Children's Fund from anyone who was not a Circle of Care member in the previous year.

"My hope is that more families in the community will get involved in supporting the Children's Fund at a higher level," he says. "At Packard, the impact a gift can have in improving the lives of children is unparalleled."

As in his business, Bill seeks the greatest return on investment of his philanthropic contributions.

"Over the years," he says, "I have seen tremendous success at the Hospital in improving quality of care, recruiting top physicians and surgeons, and building broader community support. I trust the Hospital's leadership to use my gift wisely to meet the most pressing needs as they continue to build nationally preeminent medical and surgical programs."
