Program Summary Grantmaking Criteria What We Don't Fund

Grantmaking Criteria

In assessing funding requests, the Foundation first determines whether there is a clear fit between the project being proposed and the Foundation's interests. The following questions aid the staff in making that determination:

  • Is the program consistent with the Foundation's vision, mission, and area of grantmaking interest?
  • Does the program address known needs of children and youth in San Mateo or Santa Clara County?
  • Does the program have the potential to make a meaningful impact on the health of children and youth in San Mateo or Santa Clara County?
  • Does the project present opportunities for leveraging resources?
  • Is the program prevention-oriented?
  • Is the approach for achieving the goals and objectives reasonable?
  • Are the goals and objectives clear, realistic, measurable, and appropriate to the program?
  • Is there reasonable evidence of the program's sustainability?
  • Will the project be administered by a nonprofit organization, 501(c)3, or a public entity * (e.g., health department or school) that:
    • has strong community support and involvement
    • has demonstrated capacity to implement effective programs;
    • promotes and maintains nondiscriminatory policies in its programs and workplace.

* The Foundation will consider requests from public entities that serve as a fiscal sponsor or lead agency of a collaborative or for projects of public entities that address external community, rather than internal agency needs.
