Autism in the Bay Area

Across the six-county Bay Area, special education enrollment for autism has grown more than 150 percent, from 2,195 students in 2001 to 5,633 students in 2007. Consistent with California, however, the total number of Bay Area children in special education did not climb.

Autism is least prevalent in Marin County, where the rate of students with autism is 5.2 per 1,000 students, and most common in San Mateo (7.5 per 1,000 students) and Santa Clara counties (7.6 per 1,000 students). In more than 90 percent of Bay Area school districts for which data are available, the rate of autism grew from 2005 to 2007.
