Preteens: Facing Risks
and Making Choices

A conversation with Dr. David Satcher, former surgeon general

David Satcher

In a lively conversation with a panel of preteens and audience members, Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher discussed the risks and choices faced by preteens today, and how best to support children's healthy growth. Satcher emphasized that both parents and communities need to create bonds with preteens to help children get through this period.

The June 12, 2003, conference in Redwood City also featured results of a survey of parents of preteens in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Findings indicated that many parents have serious concerns about the emotional health of their youngsters.
