Editorial: Governor Needs to Keep Promise of Health Care for Kids
This San Jose Mercury News editorial notes that Gov. Schwarzenegger has yet to make good on a promise made in his last term to provide health insurance to all California children. Pointing out that healthy children do better in school, the editorial says that health care is as important as education and calls upon the governor to outline his plan for health care for children during his State of the State speech next month. (SJ Mercury, 12/10/06)

New CA Bill Aims to Vaccinate Girls Against HPV
Legislation that would require sixth-grade girls in California to be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, which has been linked to cervical cancer, is drawing criticism from some lawmakers. The bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, D-Mountain View, and opponents say a decision about whether to get the vaccine should be left to parents, not the government. (Press-Enterprise, 12/13/06, by Hines and DeArmond)

Letter to Editor: All Californians Pay for Uninsured Children
This letter to the editor from Santa Clara Family Health Plan CEO Leona Butler underlines the necessity of providing health care for all of California's uninsured children. Butler notes that, in the long run, the cost of not providing health care is greater for all Californians. (SJ Mercury, 12/14/06, by Butler)
