A ban on smoking in cars when children are present was among several new
California laws that went into effect Jan. 1. The ban is enforceable whether

Children's Hospitals Recognize Importance of Parents
This New York Times article examines the history of children's
hospitals in the U.S. Perhaps the most notable change, the article states,
is that modern hospitals make allowances for parents to stay with their
children. Previous generations of children were separated from their parents

Card Gives a 'C' for Children's Health
The state of health and education of California 's children received
a C average grade in the annual California Report Card released this week
by Oakland-based youth advocacy group Children Now. The report issued
a C for child health insurance, a C-minus for education and a D-plus for
childhood obesity. Infant and adolescent health and afterschool services

Study Aims to Examine Possible Autism Prevention Techniques
Researchers at the University of Washington plan to study whether
eye contact and attention from parents to infants can help prevent autism.
Volunteers are being recruited for the study, which will track 200 babies
who have an older sibling diagnosed with autism. The risk of autism is
one in 20 for infants who have a sibling with the disorder. (NY Times,

HPV Vaccine Shot Painful, Patients Say
The vaccine to prevent the human papilloma virus (HPV), which
can cause cervical cancer, is one of the most painful childhood shots,
experts say. Girls who have received the shot, which is approved for ages
9 to 26, reported stinging and pain at the injection site for a day, and
