Middle
School Teachers Need Special Skills
This front page New York Times story about "rethinking" middle
school notes that a high turnover rate indicates that teachers are not
adequately prepared to face the anger, low self-esteem, and academic difficulty
that many middle school students exhibit. Experts say more states should
offer a specialized credential for middle school teachers so they can
gain a better understanding of adolescent psychology. (NY Times, 3/17/07,

Clinic
Gives Health Care Access to Low-Income Kids
This San Francisco Chronicle article features a clinic in San Francisco
that treats children from low-income families who have limited access
to health care. The Valencia Health Services Clinic provides long-term
and preventive medicine to families that otherwise might receive care
only through emergency rooms and urgent care centers. (SF Chronicle, 3/23/07,

Editorial:
Cuts to County Services Can't Be Avoided
Cutbacks in Santa Clara County services have been a long time coming,
and county officials can't hold back any more, according to this San Jose
Mercury News editorial. A budget deficit means that hundreds of county
workers may lose their jobs, and many of the cuts will come in public
health and human services, including nurses and mental health workers.
