Preteen Panel Discussion Now Available Online
You may remember the compelling panel of preteens at the 2008 Preteen Summit who gave firsthand accounts of the struggles they've faced and what makes them happy, sad, and stressed. The preteens, who attended Burnett Academy in San Jose, also answered questions from former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher and audience members. An audio recording of that discussion now is available online at preteenalliance.org, and through iTunes.

Download all the podcasts from the Preteen Summit:

>> A discussion about student stress with Dr. Denise Pope
>> Presentation of a study on Social and Emotional Learning by Dr. Roger Weissberg and Dr. Joseph Durlak

Simple Self-Affirmation Exercise Improves Grades for African American Preteens
University of Colorado at Boulder researchers have found that writing assignments designed to reinforce students' sense of identity and personal integrity helped the academic performance of African American middle school students. The results suggest that targeted psychological interventions early in students' middle school years can have lasting benefits and, if implemented on a wider scale, could help narrow the racial achievement gap among U.S. students.
