Study: Substance Use Before Age 15 Can Lead to High-Risk Behaviors Later On

Consistent with other research indicating the importance of focusing on preteens, children who drink alcohol and smoke marijuana before their 15th birthday are more likely than other preteens to engage in high-risk behaviors such as criminal activity and dropping out of school, according to a study published in the journal Psychological Science. Researchers found that the risks were similar for children who came from abusive households and already had behavior problems as children without behavior problems or the same family risk factors.

Mentoring May Protect Against Depression Among High-Risk Preteens and Teens
A new report, Positive Support: Mentoring and Depression Among High-Risk Youth, examines potential benefits of matching high-risk youth with faith-based mentors. Drawing on surveys and interviews with young people who participated in the National Faith-Based Initiative, Public/Private Ventures found that mentored youth were less likely to show signs of depression than the youth who were not matched with a mentor.
