Ophelia Kirwan Fund
Thank you for your interest in the Ophelia Kirwan Fund for Down Syndrome
Research.
Ophelia Kirwan was born on Feb. 19, 2006, in Greenwich Hospital, Connecticut.
The day after Ophelia was born, it was determined that she had Down syndrome;
that very same day, it also was discovered that Ophelia had an atrio-ventricular
canal in her heart which would require surgery to repair. Two months later,
Ophelia underwent a successful surgery at the Morgan Stanley Children's
Hospital of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center that closed the hole
in her heart. Despite these initial health obstacles, Ophelia continues
to grow into a beautiful girl and will soon be celebrating her first birthday.
Ophelia's parents realized early on that they could best serve their
daughter by working as advocates for her health and well-being as well
as on behalf of the Down syndrome community. Together they have researched
and learned as much as possible about Down syndrome, including the current
lack of treatments. They, along with family and friends, have become champions
for biomedical research on Down syndrome and hope others will join them
in supporting Dr. William Mobley's research at Lucile Packard Children's
Hospital and Stanford University School of Medicine.
