2008 Preteen Summit

How Schools and Communities Can Support
Preteen Emotional Health

Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008

The 2008 Preteen Summit on Dec. 10 was well-received by the more than 300 parents and providers who attended.

Highlights of the day included a discussion with former Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, about key aspects of a preteen's emotional health, followed by a conversation between Dr. Satcher and a panel of preteens from Burnett Academy, a public school in San Jose. Also, Stanford School of Education lecturer Denise Pope, PhD, illustrated the demands placed on a preteen during a typical school day, and outlined some ways that parents and providers can try to reduce that stress.

Later, Roger Weissberg, PhD, from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Joseph Durlak, PhD, from Loyola University Chicago presented the findings from a new study on effective practices to promote social, emotional and academic success of children in elementary and middle school. A panel of representatives from local nonprofit organizations then joined Professors Durlak and Weissberg to share examples of successful social and emotional learning programs.

Many thanks to everyone who attended the Summit.
