As hundreds of thousands of California children are moved this year from the state’s Healthy Families subsidized health insurance program to Medi-Cal coverage, some families may experience challenges in accessing or continuing medical care for their children. This is particularly true for children with special health care needs.
Here are some resources that can help:
Family Resource Centers (Family Voices)
Family Resource Centers offer information and assistance to CSHCN families regarding the Health Families to Medi-Cal transition. Locate your nearest center. You can also contact your local Family Voices Council Member Agency.
The State of California:
The State of California offers an online FAQ and provides a toll-free assistance number for families transitioning from Healthy Families to Medi-Cal: 1-800-880-5305.
California Coverage and Health Initiatives:
This nonprofit association of local Community/Children's Health Initiatives in 24 counties across California offers families an online guide to the transition in English or Spanish. The association also is surveying families and certified application assistants on any problems or challenges they may be facing during the Healthy Families to Medi-Cal transition.
