Improvements in care delivery for children with medical complexity are becoming a major focus of national and local health care and policy initiatives. A number of new models have been developed, with promising examples of enhanced care coordination and family engagement.
Discussing, Models of Care Delivery for Children with Medical Complexity, the lead author and experts in the field reviewed the article’s key content and shared thoughts on the implications of its recommendations.

Elisabeth S. Pordes, MD, MPH
Dr. Elisabeth Pordes is a pediatrician with the Complex Care/Special Needs Program at the Children Hospital of Wisconsin/Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Previously, she worked as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit hospitalist at The Monroe Carrell Jr Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Elisabeth did her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a co-leader of the residency program in community outreach.
Maria Brenner, PhD, MSc
Dr. Maria Brenner is an Associate Professor in Children's Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. She is on the nursing register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland for Children's Nurses, General Nurses, and Nurse Tutors. Maria is currently leading a team of EU researchers exploring the care of children living with complex care needs and their families, as part of Models of Child Health Appraised (MOCHA), funded by the EU Commission Horizon 2020 programme.
David Bergman, MD
Dr. David Bergman is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has been past Chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Quality Improvement and past Chair of the Board of the National Initiative for Child Health Quality. David is the Medical Director for the Complex Primary Care Clinic at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and is actively involved with patient care and the teaching of residents and medical students
Rishi K. Agrawal, MD, MPH
Dr. Rishi Agrawal is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and is a pediatric hospitalist at Lurie and La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago. He is co-chair of the Academic Pediatric Association Complex Care Special Interest Group and has a research and advocacy interest in Children with Medical Complexity.
