Pediatric Complex Care Seminar Session 4: Behavior/Child Mental Health

This webinar is part four of a 10-part seminar series entitled Collaborative Conversations with Families to Advance the Clinical Care of Children with Medical Complexities and Disabilities (C6). The series is led by complex care pediatricians from the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Lurie Children’s Hospital, and representatives from Family Voices.

In this session, Shawnda Hicks, Tina Andrews, and Dr. Antonio Hardan discussed Behavior and Child Mental Health.

Speakers

Shawnda Hicks

Program Coordinator, Partnerships for Action Voices for Empowerment (PAVE)

Shawnda has been a Program Coordinator and Family Navigator at PAVE, a non-profit that supports individuals with neurodiversity, developmental disability and medical complexity and their families for four years. She has three children, her oldest child diagnosed with trichotillomania and her son, born with Down syndrome. A lifelong learner, Shawnda is in her second year as a UW LEND Fellow in the Family Discipline Cohort.

Dr. Antonio Hardan

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Stanford University

Dr. Antonio Hardan is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also the Medical Director of the Outpatient Program in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Director of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic. Dr. Hardan’s research expertise is in the neurobiology of autism and in the development of innovative treatment. He served as a principal investigator on numerous projects examining the neurobiology of autism and assessing the effectiveness of a wide range of interventions.

Tina Andrews

Parent Consultant, Parent Information Center of Delaware

Tina is the proud mother of 5 amazing children (ages 6-17) who are unique individuals with special needs. She is their cheerleader and ardent supporter. Additionally, she is also a project coordinator, doula, perinatal educator, and health coach. In her current position, at the Parent Information Center of Delaware, she partners with families to help them find resources and supports for their health and education. 

Dr. Leslee Belzer

Child Psychologist; Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine

Dr. Leslee Throckmorton Belzer is a Pediatric Psychologist at Children's Mercy Kansas City and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UMKC School of Medicine. Her specialty is Integrated Complex Care, serving children and youth with special healthcare needs and their caregivers and siblings. She is passionate about family engagement in complex care, and as such, she serves as the faculty champion of the Children’s Mercy Patient Family Advisory Council for the Beacon Program. She is also passionate about intervention, training and research in real-world settings that elevates care access, equity and quality for our most vulnerable complex medical patients and those with the most barriers to care.
