Pediatric Complex Care Seminar Session 5: Shared Decision Making

This webinar is part five of a 10-part seminar series entitled Collaborative Conversations with Families to Advance the Clinical Care of Children with Medical Complexities and Disabilities (C6). The series is led by complex care pediatricians from the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Lurie Children’s Hospital, and representatives from Family Voices.

In this session, David Fox, Jill McCormick, and Brennan McCormick discuss shared decision making in the care of children with medical complexity.

Brennan McCormick

Person Centered Plan Facilitator

Brennan McCormick was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy at age 7 and at age 8 with Sudden Death Syndrome after a major cardiac event with lung complications due to aspiration during CPR. He went through 3 different internal defibrillator/pace-makers and by 17 after his second ablation was fully paced. Brennan received a heart transplant in 2019 and has monitoring for potential rejection and prior liver, pancreas, and lung issues. He is a Person Centered Plan Facilitator and enjoys doing education and advocacy talks around healthcare and disability.

Jill McCormick

Program Director, Washington State Family to Family Health Information Center (F2F HIC) at PAVE

Jill McCormick has been Program Director for the Washington State Family to Family Health Information Center (F2F HIC) at PAVE for the last 9 years and has worked for over 25 years in the disability and special healthcare community in differing capacities with individuals and families across the life span. She is a parent of three young adults impacted with special healthcare needs: a 27 year old son on the autism spectrum, a 24 year old daughter on the autism spectrum who is also impacted by behavioral health challenges and moderate asthma, and a 21 year old son (Brennan) with complex heart conditions.

David Fox, MD

Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital Colorado

Dr. David Fox is a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital Colorado. His research interests include shared decision making and the ways in which it can promote better care for children who are medically complex. He has looked at how physicians and families make decisions for elective surgeries like feeding tube insertion or surgery for gastroesophageal reflux. Dr. Fox tries to understand the hopes that each parent has for their child and family to make sure that all treatment aligns with those goals.
